SCIENTIFIC SPIN AND BALANCE FUN........
TOY GYROSCOPE CONTEST
Families and children can launch gyroscopes at the hands-on demonstration and then watch or take part in the International Gyroscope Contest on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 6 pm OR Sunday September 14, 2008 at 1 pm , in downtown historic Burlington, Wisconsin. The contest winner receives a classic gyroscope to keep. Gyroscopes are in the spinning top family and were invented in 1852 by Foucault, a French physicist. Gyroscopes are amazing to play and experiment with, as they can be balanced in surprising ways and places. They are a mechanical, fast spinning top suspended in a framework causing the mass to maintain a fixed direction and spin longer than typical tops.
Event admission is just $5 per person, for the event including the demonstration and contest. The event is best for ages 5 to 105, and children must be with an adult. Visitors may want to stay after the contest on either Saturday or Sunday for the famous tour and program at the Spinning Top & Yo-Yo Museum, with a separate fee.
The demonstration will include a traditional gyroscope, one that contains water, and an antique style gyro. Gyroscope Contest has two divisions: longest spin time and tricks. The Top Museum provides the gyroscope for the timed division for ages 6-adult, and participants bring or buy their own for the trick divisions. Ten different types are for sale in the museum gift shop, new and antique.
Gyroscopes are often thought of just a toy, but gyroscopes are used in navigation, missiles, space exploration, robotics, Segway scooter, and in every plane we fly in.
Then visitors have the perfect option or staying for the famous tour and hands-on program at the Spinning Top & Yo-Yo Museum tour at 7 pm on Saturday or 2 pm on Sunday. The program & show is $11 per person, all ages. Call ahead to reserve tickets, as space is limited. The 2.5 hour museum program includes seeing 2,000 tops, yo-yos, and gyroscopes on exhibit; videos; more than 35 hands-on top games and experiments to try; an I Spy Hunt with a prize, plus a live show by the Tops Expert.
